SUMMARY:2020 Clean Snowmobile Challenge
DESCRIPTION:As February draws to a close that means we are just around the corner form the SAE Annual Clean Snowmobile Challenge in the Keweenaw Peninsula where they currently have had over 150 inches of snow this year. \n\n\n\nAbout Clean Snowmobile Challenge:\n\n\n\nThe SAE International Clean\nSnowmobile Challenge (CSC) program is an engineering design competition for\nundergraduate and graduate students. The program provides participants with the\nopportunity to enhance their engineering design and project management skills\nby applying learned classroom theories in a challenging competition that tests\ntheir designs to reengineer an existing snowmobile to reduce emissions and\nnoise. Participants’ modified snowmobiles will compete in a variety of events\nincluding emissions\, noise\, fuel economy/endurance\, acceleration\, handling\,\nstatic display\, cold start and design. \n\n\n\nThe CSC Rules Committee makes\nchanges to the competition each year to keep the competition fresh and to\npresent new engineering challenges. CSC is primarily an “engine” competition\nhowever the underlying theme has remained consistent to engineer a clean and\nquiet trail sled. Current trail sleds are engineered to these standards\, but it\nis possible to achieve more. Noise levels can be reduced\, and cleaner fuels can\nlead to lower emissions. \n\n\n\nHow to get Involved:\n\n\n\nThe Milwaukee Section of SAE is responsible for helping with this event\, including judging reports written by the collegiate teams entering the competition. Your SAE Milwaukee Section needs you to help judge reports. To volunteer to judge papers\, please contact Jay Meldrum (jmeldrum@mtu.edu). Judges typically read a minimum of four reports in the category they are most comfortable with (IC engines or electric). There are also volunteer opportunities during the competition. Please go to http://saecleansnowmobile.com/ for more volunteer opportunities. A schedule of events is included in this newsletter for those who are interested in helping at competition. \n\n\n\nAttending:\n\n\n\nIf you plan on attending the SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge this year\, please reach out to the Milwaukee SAE Section at sae@c2cintegration.com or 856-313-0581 so we can help connect you with other members that are going.

SUMMARY:Engineers Presentation: Building the First "Steamship" in History
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\n\n\n\nIn 1807\, a brilliant\, creative\, and controversial American by the name of Robert Fulton declared his intent to build an experimental “steamboat” which would be used to initiate a continuous passenger service between New York City and Albany\, New York. With the success of his North River Steam Boat\, Fulton showed that it was possible to use an artificial power to alter a person’s location and the amount of time it took to change it. In so doing\, he also broke through the enormous psychological barrier that had existed in people’s minds; it was\, in fact\, possible to overcome Nature to practical effect.\n \n\n\n\nIt took time for many people to accept Robert Fulton’s triumph as the truth.\n \n\n\n\nOne man who did not need to be convinced was a sloop captain named Moses Rogers. He had witnessed the first successful runs of the North River Steam Boat to Albany\, and the experience gave him the fever–steamboat fever.\n \n\n\n\nMoses soon became one of the first steamboat captains in history\, taking command of one of Fulton’s first rivals\, the Phoenix. In his new profession\, Moses learned not only the technicalities of this revolutionary invention\, but the peculiarities of a traveling public just getting used to this new mode of transport. \n \n\n\n\nIn the years immediately following Fulton’s success\, running these steamboats on rivers\, lakes and bays became a normal and accepted part of American life. But taking such a vessel on a voyage across the ocean was a different proposition altogether. Experienced mariners didn’t think it could be done. These early steamboats\, they declared\, were just too flimsy and unwieldy to withstand the dangers of the deep.\n \n\n\n\nBut Moses believed otherwise. Combining his knowledge of the old mode of transport (sail) with the new mode of transport (steam)\, he set out to design a vessel that was capable of overcoming the many dangers of the sea. This craft would be not a steamboat\, but a “steamship\,” the first of its kind. She was named Savannah.\n \n\n\n\nThis Engineers Presentation will show how Captain Rogers designed and built this revolutionary vessel…two centuries ago!\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter:\n\n\n\nJohn Laurence Busch is an independent historian who focuses upon the interaction between humanity and technology\, specializing in the first generation of steam-powered vessels. He has devoted years of research to discovering the true story of Captain Moses Rogers and the steamship Savannah.\n \n\n\n\nThe result is STEAM COFFIN\, described by numerous book reviewers as the definitive account of what truly is America’s sea saga.\n \n\n\n\nSTEAM COFFIN has received positive book reviews from more than two dozen periodicals in the United States\, Canada\, the United Kingdom and Australia.\n\n\nJohn has made over 400 presentations on Captain Rogers and the Savannah to a wide variety of audiences\, stretching from Maine to Puerto Rico to California\, and across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe.\nFor additional background\, visit www.steamcoffin.com.\n \n\n\n\nAbout the Venue:\n\n\n\nThe event will be hosted at Discovery World Science + Technology Center. Parking is available on-site for $6\, and as an added bonus\, museum exhibit access is included in registration for this event! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration………1/24/2021-1/31/2021Presentations……At Your Convenience \n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration Fees \n\n\n\nSAE Members …………………………..$10 Retirees …………………………………….$5Guests/Non-members……………. $10Students ………………………………….. SUMMARY:SAE February 2019 Event - DeltaHawk Engines
DESCRIPTION:The development of a lightweight\, compact\, simple and reliable Heavy Fuel reciprocating engine for aerospace applications has been attempted by numerous companies.  Most of these engines are derivatives of automotive engines. DeltaHawk Engines\, Inc. of Racine\, Wisconsin has spent well over a decade developing a purpose-built aviation engine targeted both for General Aviation and UAS applications.  The goals of this project have been to produce an engine that burns heavy fuels with high fuel efficiency\, manned-aircraft reliability and very low maintenance.  With sufficient funding now in-hand\, the engine is nearing completion\, with FAA Certification and commencement of production targeted in 2019.\n \nAviation engines present a challenging set of problems for engineers\, many of which are unique to aviation. The engine requirements include race-engine like performance\, combined with very low weight\, compact size\, and extraordinary reliability and durability.  The added challenge is that these engines must meet extremely high regulatory standards and oversight from aviation authorities. Light General Aviation aircraft have historically utilized air-cooled\, spark-ignition engines\, literally derivatives of World War II technology.  These engines burn specialized aviation gasoline\, which is under environmental pressure.\nDeltaHawk has developed a Jet-Fuel powered General Aviation engine that brings the advantages of diesel technology to aviation.\nThis presentation will give an overview of the history of aviation diesels\, the market drivers\, and a look at the DeltaHawk engine architecture.\n \nPresenters:\nDennis Webb; PE\, Director of Certification and Marketing \nPaul Olesen;  Director of Engineering\nDennis Webb\, Director of Certification and Marketing\, holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from University of Missouri-Rolla and completed the Executive Program at University of Virginia – Darden School of Business.  He holds a Professional Engineer (PE) license and is an FAA Designated Engineering Representative (DER).  He is a voting member of ASTM F44 Small Airplane Standards and J02 Aviation Fuels Committees\, Co-Founder of ASTM Jet-Diesel Committee\, and a voting member of SAE E-34 Propulsion Lubricants\, E-38 Aviation Piston Engine Fuels and Lubricants\, and E-39 Unmanned Aircraft Propulsion Committees. He is also a 2000-hour Instrument-Rated Private Pilot.\nPaul Olesen\, Director of Engineering\, holds a BEng in Motorcycle Engineering from the University of Wales Trinity St. David\, specializing in two-stroke engines. He has designed and built a clean-sheet 70 hp 250cc two-stroke engine\, built a racing motorcycle\, and is a published book author on dirt bike engine building. He also co-built a Van’s RV10 aircraft and is a Private Pilot.\n\nCost: $35 (non-member)\, $25 (member)\, $20 (retiree)\, $5 (student)\nRegistration Contact: Garrett Herning @ (856)-313-0581\, sae@c2cintegration.com\, or website: Event Calendar for the Milwaukee Section of SAE\nDeadline: Friday February 22nd – Max attendance 65
