About the Presenter:

Dr. Jay Zhou, CTO at JHZ Strategic QA, is SAE Fellow and Mentor, and ASQ Fellow. He serves on the Advisory Board for Eastern Michigan University QMP, and SAE Editorial Boards for Journal of Materials and Manufacturing and Journal of Passenger Vehicle Systems, SAE Instructor for AV and EV reliability (https://www.sae.org/learn/content/c2313/). He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from University of Michigan.

Dr. Zhou has extensive global experience. With more than 28 years of experience at Ford Motor Company, he held various leadership positions, including Vice President of Ford Asia Pacific/China Quality and New Model Programs, Corporate Executive Technical Leader serving on Technology Advisory Board, Asia Pacific and Africa Reliability Manager, North Truck Quality Manager, Ford Otosan (Turkey) Transit Connect Quality Manager, and Ford Mazda (Japan) Escape Quality Manager. As Corporate Executive Technical Leader, Dr. Zhou was responsible for developing Quality strategy, Quality Operating System, and Quality and Productivity Improvement Plans. As VP of Ford Asia Pacific/China Quality and New Model Programs Launch, Dr. Zhou was responsible for launching new vehicles in the region, managing quality improvement at more than 10 plants, and ensuring quality on imported and exported vehicles. Prior to joining Ford, he worked on airplane jet engines at Pratt & Whitney.

Dr. Zhou has trained over 15,000 individuals in more than 20 countries. He has published over 30 technical papers, holds a US patent on vehicle durability, and has been a keynote speaker and panelist at various conferences. Furthermore, he has been awarded ASQ Quality Professional of Year 2009, ASQ Testimonial Award two times, Taguchi Robust Design award three times, and Ford Quality Award five times.

About the Presentation:

Reliability of Autonomous Vehicles (1 hour)
This lecture will review the current state of vehicle reliability, and introduce system Engineering V Model, Robust Engineering and a framework intended to prevent failure modes during the development of autonomous vehicles. The lecture also discusses various reliability design and analysis methods, and explores the following topics:
Fatalities of Different Transport Modes
Motor Vehicle Fatalities (drunk driving, distraction and speedy)
SAE J3016 Levels of Driving Automation
Disengagements of Autonomous Tests
Crashes of ADAS-Equipped Vehicles
Crashes of ADS-Equipped Vehicles Tested on Public Roads
AI/Machine Learning in AV
Sensor Robustness (Camera, Radar, Lidar)
Redundancy for Reliability
Failure Mode Avoidance
